It is reported that the time derivative of the temperature is a useful parameter for predicting the quality of photospheric images since slightly positive values of the time derivative correlate with the highest-quality images. Ground heat and convection flow can interfere with observations. An analysis of thermal field effects near ground level is provided, and a method of detecting aerosol convection is discussed.
