Recently, the structure of the reconnection layer, which corresponds to the layer of MHD wave modes in the Petschek-type (1964) reconnection model, has been analyzed as a function of the inflow parameters adjacent to this layer. The results of this analysis have been applied to the example of a magnetopause crossing previously interpreted in terms of reconnection: the ISEE 1 magnetopause encounter on September 8, 1978. Comparison of the predicted structure of the reconnection layer with the data shows that the Petschek model provides a useful framework for interpreting satellite data. In particular, strong evidence is found for the combination of slow shocks and Alfven waves predicted from the model. The results additionally emphasize the importance of heavy ion effects on the measurements. Features also occur in the experimental observations which are outside the expectations base on the ideal MHD analysis. For example, the signatures corresponding to the different MHD wave modes do not show clear separation in the data.
