It has been pointed out previously by Tera et al. (1974) that a possible interpretation of the radiometric data for the first 600 Ma of lunar chronology is that widespread simultaneous metamorphism could as well result from a single widespread event such as Imbrium as from a multiple basin-forming sequence in a short period of time. The paper presents arguments that, indeed, Imbrium ejecta probably dominate most lunar highland samples and that it seems possible to date several major basins at times considerably more than 3.9 Ga ago.
