Work on detecting meteoric aerosols in the upper atmosphere on the basis of twilight phenomena is described. Enhancement of crepuscular luminance accompanying the apparition of meteor showers, the shape of the characteristic diffusion indicatrix for upper-atmosphere aerosols, and depolarization of sky twilight radiation are the principal phenomena examined. The region from 50 to 150 km, too high for sounding balloons and too low for satellites, is in question. Ejecta of volcanic eruptions, and noctilucent clouds, also figure among the crepuscular phenomena dealt with.
