The authors describe the general principles behind a polychromatic adaptive optics program for astronomy. In this program the atmospheric wavefront distortions are measured at visible wavelengths (700 nm) using an astronomical object in the vicinity of the infrared object of interest. The resulting wavefront corrections are applied to an infrared imaging system which utilizes a two-dimensional detector array. The authors describe the principles of this adaptive optics system.
