The massless Dirac equation is solved on compact manifolds (S4 and CP2×S2) in the presence of torsion. The normalizable solutions display chiral asymmetry when the torsion is given a monopolelike, or instantonlike, form. The Cartan equations, the field equations for the torsion, are checked for ghosts and higher derivatives. In the models studied here, the torsion is typically a gauge field, and its matter source obeys a constraint; this constraint is checked for consistency with the constraint due to invariance under local Lorentz transformations.
