The reported investigation shows that the lower-hybrid-drift instability can operate over a significant part of the collisionless reconnection region and under conditions which are considerably less strenuous than the ion acoustic instability. The investigation is based on an analysis performed by Davidson et al. (1977). Aspects of instability theory are reviewed and the application of the theory to the magnetotail is discussed.
