A theory of a rotating uniform gas cloud that contracts gravitationally due to secular loss of angular momentum is applied to (Pop. I) protostars of hypothetical origin in the interstellar medium. Representative thermal histories are displayed and the influence of various parameters discussed. It appears that some protostars, particularly the more massive ones, are apt to approach the mainsequence by a Helmholtz-Kelvin-like textit{expansion from below} rather than by the familiar contraction from above.
