The theoretical concepts and models describing the coupling of the auroral zone ionosphere and the outer magnetosphere are reviewed. The dynamics of auroral zone particles are discussed, including adiabatic motions in the converging geomagnetic field and the modifications of adiabatic trajectories due to wave-particle interactions. The microscopic and macroscopic characteristics of the formation of parallel electric fields and the effects of ionospheric conductivity are examined. Consideration is given to time-dependent coupling, Alfven wave propagation, ionospheric feedback, field-aligned current generation, and the dynamics of the boundary layer.
