The structure of the Milky Way in the region of the southern constellations Vela and Puppis is studied on the base of photometric data for 838 stars of the spectral types O and B. For this purpose the UBV values of Velghe (1970) and Denoyelle (1970 and 1977) are supplemented by the observations of Haug (private communication) who has also measured Hβ indices for most of the objects. After their homogeneous reduction absolute magnitudes can be determined with the calibration of Crawford (1978), so that for the first time reliable distance data are present for a great number of programm stars in this galactic area. The spatial distribution of the objects and the interstellar extinction clearly shows a continuation of the local spiral arm in the direction of the galactic longitude l ≅ 265°. In addition a filamentary structure is recognizable which probably converges with the Carina arm in a distance of r ≅ 3.5 kpc.
