The matrix element, which is necessary for evaluating the effect of aspherical perturbations on the splitting and coupling of modes of the Earth's free oscillations, is derived for a transversely isotropic earth model. The terms associated with the hydrostatic ellipticity are expressed in a form which does not include the derivatives of model parameters. It is also shown that the previous results for the isotropic case require some corrections.
