The equatorial quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) and their effects on the dynamic response of the middle atmosphere are investigated using a global three-dimensional model with a vertical extension from 10 to 150 km height. Special emphasis is given to the influence of the QBO on sudden major stratospheric warmings. First numerical simulation experiments have shown that the development of a major warming is influenced by the phase of the QBO (west or east). New results of model calculations employing initial wind fields which are characterized by realistic vertical wind gradients in the tropics between 10 and 40 km height indicate a different development of a major warming: The dynamical effects of the middle atmosphere and especially the stratospheric warming is generally enhanced when the lower equatorial stratosphere is influenced by easterly winds. A detailed analysis of the model results and a comparison with the findings of the former study is presented in this paper.
