Blum's critical comments (this issue) on a paper by Stubbe (1972) are discussed in order. The discussion includes experimental evidence for or against the validity of the barometric law in the lower thermosphere, the influence of the shape of the vertical velocity profile on the particle density-height-distribution, and the significance of the results in terms of time constants. The discussion proves Blum's conclusion ``At lower heights (z < 200 km) the deviations (from diffusive equilibrium) are at least one order of magnitude less than Stubbe's estimates'' to be unjustified.
