Giant radio sources (GRSs), defined to be those with a projected linear size >~1 Mpc, are the largest single objects in the Universe, and are useful for probing a number of astrophysical questions. The lobes of radio emission in these sources extend for hundreds of kpc from the initial acceleration regions, called hotspots, towards the nuclear regions of their parent galaxies. Spectral studies of the lobes, as well as comparisons of radiative lifetimes with times scales of transport of plasma, suggest several cases of in situ acceleration of the radiating particles. Such studies may also help constrain different processes responsible for re-acceleration such as collisionless reconnection and Fermi-type shock acceleration. Here we present the initial results of a multifrequency study of a sample of GRSs made with the Very Large Array and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope.
