Spectra from two flare events are employed to calculate the electric field strengths in solar flares, and comparisons are made with field strengths which would be associated with instabilities in the flare plasma. The linear and quadratic components of Stark broadening are used to estimate the field strengths in the flare regions. The data cover the spectral interval 3600-4500 A for a limb flare and a disk white-light event. The limb flare external field strength is projected at 0.5 kV/cm, while the disk flare has a field of about 1.3 kV/cm in the kernal above the sunspot umbra. It is suggested that the fields are generated by resistive tearing mode instabilities.
