The development of the 3.5-m telescope is examined, with attention given to its dome design, material structure, and characteristic features. The telescope is mounted on a horseshoe frame and is hydrostatically supported. The optics of the system (reflectors and mirrors) are analyzed; the primary focus is a Ritchey/Chretien system and the secondary focus is Cassegrain. The control and tuning of the telescope which is achieved using microprocessors and a drive-torque motor, respectively, are studied. The capabilities and procedures for operating the telescope are discussed.
