The geometry of the transition region of the solar wind and its dynamics during the 11-year solar cycle are investigated on the basis of data for 1972-1982; shapes representing the heliolatitudinal geometry of the transition region are presented. The existence of a correlation between the location of the transition-region boundaries and the Kp index makes it possible to use observations of the transition region to predict geomagnetic activity over a period longer than that allowed by the use of conventional scintillation observations.
