THE existence of large lunar tidal effects in the F2 region of the ionosphere at latitudes near the magnetic equator has been demonstrated by Martyn1, and by McNish and Gautier2, at Huancayo and elsewhere. It was found at Huancayo that minima in the ordinary-ray critical frequency for the F2 region, foF2, occurred at the times of greatest amplitude of the diurnal variation in the earth's horizontal magnetic field, that is, about four days after the new and the full moon.
