Using the nonstationary gasdynamic model of Bierman et al. (1967), the evolution towards a bow shock in the plasma flow around a comet from an initial state which is free of any discontinuity is studied for several gas production rates between 2.2 x 10 to the 30th/s and 2.2 x 10 to the 25th/s, including those of comet Giacobini-Zinner and comet Halley at 1 AU. Photoionization is the only ionization mechanism considered. The model indicates that no shock will be detectable along the ICE path, and that if the Vega/Giotto spacecraft enters the cometary atmosphere, a shock will only be expected when the spacecraft leaves the Halley atmosphere.
