We present in full detail a method for solving the combined equations of statistical equilibrium and radiative transfer for line and continuum transitions. The method can be used to determine the variation of atomic number densities with depth in a stellar atmosphere. Local thermodynamic equilibrium is not assumed. In this paper, we discuss only the basic source-function calculations. In subsequent papers, we shall discuss related interative procedures and the general determination of a theoretical spectrum.
