BACKSCATTER measurements obtained at Arecibo have provided evidence for ionospheric heating by photoelectrons streaming from the magnetic conjugate point (MCP)1. These results have shown that during winter, as the Sun rises in the conjugate hemisphere, electron temperatures in the local unlit ionosphere will rise at altitudes of about 300 km and above.
