The role of Exosat in advancing understanding of X-ray bursters is addressed. The Exosat instrumentation is reviewed and its orbit and mission schedule are described. An overview of the history of X-ray bursters is given, a burster model is presented, and aspects of the theory of bursters are considered. Remaining problems in understanding X-ray bursters are examined.
