Laser guide stars can be produced by Rayleigh scattering of light emitted by a pulsed excimer laser. The necessary laser output power is calculated to be 78 W for an adaptively corrected 2-meter telescope working in conditions where seeing-cell diameter is 18.5 cm. Because an array of laser guide stars must be used in the system, the required power increases as the square of the telescope aperture.
