An account is given of the optimization of microchannel plate image intensifier systems for Hartmann-Shack wavefront-sensing adaptive optics suitable for astronomical instruments. Attention is given to the practical aspects of the operation of GaAs photocathode intensifiers, especially with respect to quantum efficiency and its implications for the governing assumptions of this design effort. Future possibilities for the use of these detectors in wavefront sensing nearer the IR range are evaluated; negative-affinity photocathode development shows promise of good spectral response in the IR.
