A palaeomagnetic record extending back to ~ 8000 BP has been obtained from cores of sediment from Lake Skanderborg in Denmark. The time-scale has been calibrated by 24 radiocarbon dates on three of the cores. The main features in the declination and inclination records can be correlated with those in records from the United Kingdom but with age differences of up to ~ 1000 yr. In general, features younger than about 4500 BP appear to be older in the Danish record than in the United Kingdom record, whereas features older than 4500 BP appear to be younger. The motion of the geomagnetic vector since 6000 BP has included both clockwise and anticlockwise looping but most of the open looping is clockwise. The magnetic properties of the sediment are consistent with the major carrier of the remanence, both natural and induced, being fine-grained magnetite.
