Tidal gravity anomalies appear to vary linearly with terrestrial heat flow. The linear relationship between heat flow and heat production within an individual heat-flow province indicated that variations in heat flow depend on the distribution of heat sources situated in the upper crust. This implied a measurable upper crustal effect on the tidal response of the Earth.
