Techniques for characterizing the density structure of the solar wind in the inner heliosphere on the basis of ground-based radio observations are reviewed, and recent results are summarized. Consideration is given to refractive scattering near the sun, interplanetary scintillations (IPSs), the advantages of IPS observations over in situ measurements of solar-wind conditions, and IPS images of interplanetary transients.
