The authors analyse the equilibrium of a prominence by modelling it as a line of current under the action of gravity and of a two-dimensional constant force-free field. They show that a region of non-equilibrium may occur, if the field strength is great enough, for some distribution of the base flux. This occurs for both Kippenhahn-Schlüter and Kuperus-Raadu topologies and the region of non-equilibrium increases with the shear.
