The authors consider the 3-D normal mode response of a Maxwell viscoelastic earth model. They find that the partitioning of modal strengths, amongst the various modal branches, is significantly different for the case of the l Love number, which governs tangential deformations, than it is for the h and k Love number, which are associated, respectively, with radial deformations and gravitational potential perturbations. The partitioning and the differences are a strong function of the spherical harmonic degree.
