The paper examines the possibility of investigating the ionospheric effects of solar flares by means of the HF Doppler technique. The Doppler frequency shift during SFD events as a function of transmitter frequency is studied for different reflection heights. To obtain the dependence of the change in frequency in analytical form a simple model of the undisturbed ionosphere is used consisting of parabolic E- and F2-layers with a linear increase of electron density N in between. In addition, the nature of the dependence is determined for a range of transmitter frequencies and for heights, at which the electron density changes during the flare. Finally, estimates of the spectral distribution of solar radiation in the range from 1 to 1037 A are made for the initial phases of flares that occurred on 28 August 1966 and 23 May 1967.
