A theory of the coupling of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is presented which incorporates the nonlinear physics of the Zakharov (1972) model, and good agreement with the experiments of Walsh et al. (1984) is found. The present work differs from previous work in the presentation of calculations for finite slab geometry. Nonlinear saturation is found to occur before the system reaches the linear asymptotic regime usually associated with absolute instability. It is shown that the competition between SRS and SBS is controlled by the ratio of the actual SRS and SBS growth rates, gamma(R)/gamma(B).
