Data from a small isolated substorm occurring on March 22, 1979 are used to study the relationship between daytime and nighttime magnetic Pi2 and bay variations. Characteristics of the substorm event include the simultaneous occurrence of low-latitude Pi2 and bay signatures in the daytime and nighttime sectors, current wedgelike bay disturbances at midlatitudes and low latitudes in the daytime sector, and equatorial enhancement of daytime bay disturbances. The data suggest the possibility that daytime magnetic bay and Pi2 variations related to the unusual events are induced by a dayside current wedge formed around 15:00 LT and an equatorial ionospheric current driven by instantaneous transmission of enhanced polar electric field to the equator during the substorm.
