The rate of extensive air showers at large zenith angles is calculated starting from a cosmic-ray spectrum determined from recent data. We investigate the sensitivity of this rate and the muon flux to both composition of cosmic-rays and the behavior of high energy hadronic interactions. We found that primaries heavier than helium are required to account for the detected horizontal shower rate. There is a hint of a bend in the shower size spectrum corresponding to a primary energy of a few tens of TeV which could be explained from the present knowledge of composition and hadronic cross-sections consistent with current data.
