Photographs and drawings of Venus made over a period of 85 years are analyzed in order to determine the rotation period of the ultraviolet markings observed. Examination of 204 documents made from 1893 to 1978 indicates that a synodic statistical retrograde rotation period of 4.02185 days leads to a flat longitudinal distribution of the forked markings, while one of 3.99525 days reveals a concentration of 70 percent of the markings in one hemisphere, in agreement with data obtained by Mariner 10. The precision of the determination is confirmed by a statistical analysis, and a previous estimate of 4.0285 days is attributed to the effects of averaging between the rotation speeds of the upper and lower portions of the Venus atmosphere.
