A theoretical estimate is made of the diffracted solar light intensity in the primary focal plane of a coronagraph externally occulted by a continuous screen. The screen has an opening (scanning aperture) that is peculiar in terms of its shape and arrangement; it views a radial portion of the solar corona. The use of this type of highly efficient external occulter makes it possible to dispense with the Lyot scheme.
