The rapid onset in auroral substorm activity, as indicated by the AE index, has been associated with the ionospheric virtual height enhancement (Delta h' F) over a sunspot maximum period (1980-1982) and for a range of latitudes. The height increments, characteristic of large-scale ionospheric disturbances, were traced at 18 ionosonde stations in the Asian-Australian and European-African sectors following pre-midnight isolated auroral substorm onsets. An apparent periodic ionospheric response was noted, with the second maximum of Delta h' F consistently observed near the sunrise sector, particularly for the Asian region. Further analysis, using the Delta h' F data from a longitudinal chain of Japanese stations, applied to isolated substorms occurring in the post-midnight sector, showed a consistent morning height enhancement. Finally, the statistical analysis of 141 substorm onsets indicated that the morning height enhancement, particularly in winter, is a prominent feature of the disturbed ionosphere during sunspot maximum. A possible link may exist between the median virtual height maximum in the morning and the storm-induced h' F enhancement.
