Two experimental methods for condensing silicates from vapors of their constituents are discussed and compared. The first involves reactive dc sputtering of silicon alloy cathodes, while the second is based on gas evaporation and precipitation of smoke particles from the vapor. Some silicate glass films prepared by the reactive-sputtering method are described.
