Magnetic-field and current-system variations in the magnetotail are calculated on the basis of a specific time dependence of the electric field along a reconnection line. The results indicate that three-dimensional reconnection necessarily leads to the appearance of a system of field-aligned currents. Specifically, it is shown that magnetic reconnection can be the source of Birkeland current loops in substorms.
