We present an overview of observations of FUors and EXors and discuss how they can constrain the current theories for these objects. The recent discovery of more members of these rare categories of eruptive young stars and their study with a wide range of modern observational techniques have offered new insights into these violent phenomena. Special attention is given to the recent EXor eruption in V1647 Ori associated with McNeil's Nebula. New survey techniques that will systematically detect such events from the onset of brightening are discussed.
