After some remarks on the final states of stellar evolution (white dwarfs, neutron stars), the gravitational collapse of a spherical object is discussed. The issue of anticollapse is critically reviewed. The collapse of a rotating object, and the possibilities of extracting energy from black holes are treated. Some ways to detect collapsed objects are discussed.
