From a sample return viewpoint, surface dust samples that are easily collected will indicate physical characteristics that can serve as crucial inputs to models of the current Martian climate. If the dust represents the products of global erosion, its chemical composition and mineralogy will be essential to understanding the composition of the Martian crust.
