There are many reported observations of luminescence on the surface of the Moon. They fall into two categories: spectrometric and colorimetric. The authors will show that the spectrometric technique is the more accurate and sensitive, but that both techniques can yield misleading data if the most careful precautions are omitted. Details will be given of spectrometric observations obtained over the last few years of their significance in elucidating the mechanism of luminescence.
