Studies of variable stars in nearby galaxies serve many purposes: establishing distance scales; testing ever-improving models of stellar evolution; comparisons with counterpart variable stars in our Galaxy; and, for improving our understanding of galaxy evolution. We are proposing to continue our long-term goal of establishing accurate physical characteristics for the variable stars in the oldest globular clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. In Dec07 and Jan08 we used the SMARTS 0.9-m telescope to acquire an exceptional set of B,V-photometry of the variable stars in NGC 2257 and NGC 2210. These CCD images are now measured and are allowing us (by combining the new photometry with older data) to establish, for the first time, precise and accurate pulsation periods, pulsation modes, amplitudes, metallicities, period change rates, Fourier parameters, mean luminosities, mean temperatures, and masses (both pulsational and double-mode). With this proposal we are requesting time to observe two more clusters (each with a significant population of RR Lyrae stars) that are badly in need of extensive new-epoch high-precision two-color photometry.
