Lockhart, Misra, and Prigogine have pointed out that geodesic flow in an
open k=-1 Friedmann universe is unstable. The implications of this
instability are considered for a universe whose energetics was
dominated, at some early time, by the Lorentz-invariant expectation
value of a quantum stress-energy tensor.
