Observations of the nighttime thermospheric winds obtained with a Fabry-Perot interferometer at Arecibo are presented for the period 1980-1987. High-resolution spectra of the O(1D) airglow emission at 630 nm are obtained and the neutral wind field is inferred. Well-defined seasonal and nocturnal variations of both the zonal and meridional components of the thermospheric wind field are observed. In each year, eastward flow was observed in the evening hours with an average peak velocity of about 100 m/s near 2200 AST. It is concluded that the nocturnal and seasonal variations in the neutral wind field are unaffected by changes in the solar cycle.
