We propose to obtain JHK' images of a small, representative, sample of isolated dwarf Irregular galaxies. The near-IR observations will be combined with existing optical images to investigate the age and metallicity of the dominant stellar populations, with the ultimate goal of understanding the onset and propagation of star formation in low mass systems. The nearby dwarf galaxies are the only objects in which we can study in detail the star formation process in physical conditions similar to those of the early universe (i.e., low density and low metallicity). The proposed observations, in conjunction with complementary HI and optical imaging and spectroscopy, will provide crucial insight into the evolution of dwarf galaxies, and of galaxies in general.
