THE geomagnetic field apparently drifts westward about the geographic axis at about 0.2° yr-1. Malin & Saunders have attempted to determine the directions of the axes about which a `westward' drift would best fit the fields during six successive epochs1. They did not determine the circular standard deviations of the axis directions but, as the five successive axes moved fairly smoothly through an arc of about 20°, they assumed that the axes had been reasonably well determined, and interpreted the movement in terms of physical processes in the Earth's core.
