THE low upper limit of 1 SNU (10-36 captures per 37Cl atom s-1) on the observed neutrino flux from the Sun obtained by Davis1 has proved an embarrassment to stellar physicists, and in spite of considerable intellectual gymnastics the standard solar models predict at least 6 SNU (ref. 2). The essential difficulty has been to produce a model with a low enough central temperature that can still produce the observed luminosity of the Sun with an age of 4.7 × 109 yr.
