Empirical and theoretical models of the photosphere and low chromosphere are reviewed with especial reference to the Bilderberg continuum atmosphere. The observations and analysis of the continuous spectrum are emphasized. A minimum electron temperature of 4300 K at lg τ 0≈ -4 is suggested by new observations in the ultraviolet and far infrared.
