The paper summarizes recent results on the physics of the quiet solar atmosphere and active regions. The main points addressed are solar rotation, velocity fields and waves, the magnetic-field concentration in the quiet photosphere and chromosphere, the chromosphere-corona transition region, coronal magnetic fields, and prominences. Evidence is presented for a rigidly rotating solar core and a secular decrease in solar angular momentum. The magnetic-field structure of the chromospheric network is described, and it is noted that acoustic waves generated in the convection region seem to be responsible for the heating of the low chromosphere. It is also shown that electric currents can be significant in certain coronal regions, active-region prominences can be expected to form from coronal material only if sufficiently strong compression occurs, and quiescent prominences are a manifestation of a process of slow magnetic-field reconnection in the corona.
